Finished Witch’s Brew Cowl with Halloween candy and my favorite seasonal thing…eggnog!

Witch's Brew Cowl by Tellybean Knits

October 29, 2024 by Amanda Jennings in 2024 Knitting, Pattern Review

It’s been ages since I’ve updated but with more people blogging again and using other platforms like Substack, I thought I’d dip my toes back in with a lil finished project post. I have stacks of sewing and knitting projects I can share, most will be new to you since I’m no longer on social media. I’ve been thinking for a while that it would be fun to review patterns I’ve worked on, share any modifications, etc. I do feel like I owe everyone a bit of an explanation about the past few years health wise but I’m not sure how to begin that right now so we will talk crafting first! ☺️

This month I worked on Tellybean Knit’s Witch’s Brew Cowl. I haven’t done a Fair Isle project since 2012 and this was my first big project since July’s hand surgery so there was definitely a bit of a learning curve and remembering how on earth to do it. By the time I finished the cat row, I figured out that what was the most comfortable for me, which was knitting one strand Continental with my left hand and one strand English with my right. I typically knit English, it’s how I learned in my early 20s and I taught myself Continental in my early 30s as I’d read it was more ergonomic. Each are fine with me but I find English more familiar.

A Fair Isle Cowl with a witchy themed motif lays on a bedspread. Colors are soft and faded.

In 2018-2019 I did what I refer to as “the big destash”, I gave away or donated 95% of my yarn stash thinking that I’d be unable to knit again. I kept very few things, mostly gifts from friends and my husband. I did keep two mini yarn sets from Sunshine Yarns, purchased in 2012. They just looked so cute and shiny in their little package, all lined up nicely. I’m glad I hung onto them because they came in handy for this project.

I really loved how this MKAL was formatted. The clue layout and overall PDF design was really nicely laid out, you can tell that so much thought was put into this MKAL. Once a day you’d receive a clue and Stephanie broke down each motif by the yardage you needed which made picking colors much easier for me since I didn’t have a kit and have very few skeins in my stash. I printed my clues and found they printed beautifully, nice size and super easy to read.

I ended up using all sorts of odds and ends of yarn, borrowing a skein from Ashleigh, dipping into a skein I got on clearance at my LYS earlier this summer and then using some that I’d earmarked as a hat. I still have enough leftover for the hat but now I think I’d like to knit Gathering Flowers with it instead. I spent so many afternoons weighing yarn and keeping a sheet of paper with the weights and notes, I really wanted to not buy anything for this project and while my cowl isn’t quite as cohesive as others, I’m glad I stuck with it.

I worked on mine with Ashleigh and checking in with our friend Margo on Instagram along with sending Emily what felt like 90 messages per day asking her opinions. I really miss social media sometimes and the actual SOCIAL aspect of it, like sharing projects and enjoying seeing others projects progress. I had six people on Ravelry who’s projects I’d check in on regularly because I liked the colors they were working with, I looked forward to their updates.

One part of the MKAL that I appreciated was the video tutorials, I am typically a written word learner but watched all her tutorials, usually while I was weighing yarn.

A Fair Isle colorwork knit cowl flipped inside out so the wrong side of the work is showing

What I learned:

  • An i-cord edging that was different than what I’d previously done.

  • Eye of newt stitch - so much fun! This is the green stitch in the cowl.

  • I used this video for adding a new color in, I wish I’d learned this sooner!

  • Stephanie’s way of weaving in the ends.

  • I wove in my ends and then blocked it, I was worried that this would cause puckers but it ended up being totally fine!

What I’d like to do differently next time:

  • For sure a different way to trap the floats. I struggled mentally with how to wrap the yarn around the needle and towards the end I ended up just juggling the skeins over and under each other. While it worked, it wasn’t the most efficient.

  • More breaks. I found myself getting so into this project that I’d sit far too long. In the future when working on a “potato chip” project, setting a timer for every 25 minutes would be great.

  • An alternative to yarn needles. The plastic ones I have are too fine, I couldn’t grasp them and while the metal ones are thicker, the metal was cold, I couldn’t feel it in my fingertips. I might try the methods of weaving the ends in as you go by knitting into them.

I like to think of this cowl as giving “cranberry bog witch” vibes and I listened to many spooky and dark books while working on it, my favorites being The Tainted Cup, The Dead Take the A Train and Exposure.

Someday or One Day

What I watched in January

February 01, 2021 by Amanda Jennings

I had a lot of t.v. watching time last month while Eric & I were sick.

Asian dramas are my favorite thing to watch and I thought I’d share what I watched along with some mini reviews. All the links will bring you to the cast, synopsis and I’ll make a note of where to watch.

Finished:

  • Zombie Detective - Korean drama. We started this in November and finished it up this month. I went on a zombie kick this earlier winter and found this to be funny. The World King Agency detectives were absolutely hilarious. Streaming on Viki.

  • The King: Eternal Monarch - Korean drama. I reluctantly started watching this in December, I’m not a huge Lee Min Ho fan but this ended up being a good solid winter watch that we looked forward to each evening. Woo Do- Hwan is excellent and I didn’t realize Kim Yong-Ji was in it, she’s really good in Tale of the Nine Tailed. Streaming on Netflix.

  • Detective L - Chinese drama. I really like Chinese Republican Era shows and this has Sherlock vibes that I was really into. I really liked Johnny Bai in Guardian and enjoyed him in this a lot. I was one of the people who saw the last episode and shrieked “WAS THAT IT”. Apparently I’m not alone. Streaming on YouTube.

  • A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower - Chinese drama. I went into this show completely blind after a friend suggested it to me knowing I love mysteries and I’m glad I did because I watched it all in one weekend. It was intense, dark, graphic, twisty and turn-y with great back story, character development and story telling. It’s interesting because each character tells the same story from their point of view with the final episodes being told by MeiBao who was the victim. I highly suggest this but TW: child abuse, neglect, rape, etc. It’s graphic. Also, there is just one song on the OST and it’s perfect. Streaming on YouTube.

  • Day and Night - Chinese drama. I really like mysteries but this dragged on for about 1,000 years. Pan Yue Ming did a great acting job but the writing felt choppy. Some episodes had me really interested to see where it was going, followed by a few slow, slow, slow ones. Thirty two episodes. Streaming on Netflix.

  • Someday or One Day - Taiwanese drama. I think this will forever be one of my favorite dramas of all time. Absolutely heartbreaking and accurate portrayal of grief, heartbreak, depression and friendship. The OST absolutely makes the show. It’s very heavy so I’m not sure I’d watch it again but I’ll listen to the soundtrack for sure. Stick with it, the first episode wasn’t for me but once you get into it, it’s good. Streaming on Viki.

  • Midnight Diner - Japanese drama. I watched the first three seasons and wasn’t prepared for how much I loved it. I found it very comforting to watch for some reason. Seeing the characters interact, watching them eat their favorite foods and learning all their personalities was really satisfying for me. I watched them all back to back in three days. Streaming on Netflix.

  • Reply 1988 - Korean drama. Eric watched this while he was quarantined in the living room, I didn’t watch it but he enjoyed it so I may check it out in the future? The cast is fantastic and it’s a classic. Streaming on Netflix.

Currently Watching:

  • Midnight Diner Tokyo Stories - Japanese drama. I’ve only watched season one and three episodes of season two because I’m trying to pace myself. I discovered that Just One Cookbook has an entire collection of recipes from the show, I’ve had great success with her recipes before so I’m looking forward to trying some of these. Streaming on Netflix.

  • Run On - Korean Drama. This drama has been such a treat. It’s lighthearted but not, it has lots of energy but it’s relaxing to watch and the characters are fantastic. I might suggest this to someone who hasn’t watched a k-drama before because it’s moving at a good pace, some of the familiar tropes are there but it’s entertaining. Seo Dan-A’s wardrobe is absolutely perfect, so many great sneaker and dress combos. I’ll be sad when this wraps up. Streaming on Netflix.

  • The Devil Punisher - Taiwanese drama. I’m on the fence about this drama. Some times it’s great, others I’m a bit bored, it definitely is a bit too drawn out. It only releases once a week so I’m sticking with it as something to watch on Sunday nights. I think I wanted a bit more mythology? Streaming on Netflix.

  • To My Star - Korean BL Webtoon, I’ve watched up to episode five. I’m enjoying this, I love the shorter episodes but I’m nervous about how it’s going to end. Streaming on Viki.

  • Awaken - Korean Drama. We got to episode eleven before pausing for a bit. The subject matter is pretty intense but the acting is great. We’ll likely come back to it later. Also Namkoong Min keeps reminding me of Jang Hyuk? Streaming on Viki.

  • To Love - Chinese drama. I’m on episode twenty one and I’m not sure if I’ll keep going? Part of me is OBSESSED and wants to know how it ends, the OST is great, the acting is good, the storytelling is unique. But I’m also not sure it needs to be forty episodes. Streaming on Viki.

  • Do You Like Brahms? - Korean Drama. I’m up to episode 12 and will likely finish it this next weekend. I love the OST, the acting and the cinematography. It is a bit sad to see Chae Song-A constantly kicked around.

I probably will watch a bit less in February. I’m playing a lot of Animal Crossing at the moment and working on some SkillShare classes but I really want to wrap up some of these shows before starting something new.

Bon Appetit Basque Burnt Cheesecake

January 03, 2021 by Amanda Jennings

I love looking at home cafe blogs, Instagram accounts and Youtube channels. I’ve had a lot of fun trying new recipes for food and drinks, it’s definitely become my favorite quarantine hobby!

A Basque Burnt Cheesecake has been on my to bake list since April and I finally tackled it Saturday night. I used the recipe from Bon Appetit and my only adjustment was to make the recipe in two pans, 5 and 8 inch because I didn’t have the called for 10 inch pan. I think not having the correct sized pan was what stopped me from making it sooner but I was overthinking it. :)

basquecheesecake.jpg

The smaller cheesecake sunk beautifully and browned a bit more which I prefer to the larger one. The texture is really interesting because it’s rich tasting but also extremely light and creamy. Also not too sweet. I wish I’d pulled the larger one out of the oven a touch sooner, some of the cheesecakes I’ve seen online are runnier and sort of ooze when you cut into them. I wasn’t 100% sure if I’d like that but having tried it now, I think it would be fun to try. But that being said, I’m not sure how I’d get the ooze along with the darker exterior.

I plan on wrapping individual slices and freezing for later. Having a slice of cheesecake later this winter with a hot black coffee sounds like something nice to look forward to after a long walk!

Wee Braw Bag from Sweet Cinnamon Roses

Happy New Year!

I made a very sweet little bag to hold my nail care tools from the Wee Braw Bag pattern by Sweet Cinnamon Roses. I’ve gotten into the habit of painting my nails and instead of buying a basket, I opted to sew something while on a Zoom call.

It went together very quickly. Originally when I downloaded the pattern I planned on using some Liberty fabrics that I purchased over the summer but after looking for a piece of linen, I stumbled upon these fabrics that I’ve used many times before in my stash. Many years ago someone said “all your sewing projects look the same”, which I took to be an insult but now I’m learning to lean into it. Some colors just feel comfortable to me and warm linen, rust and peach are just what I love sewing with. I’ll have to save the Liberty fabric for something else!

One thing I noticed while sewing is when you faux bind the pocket piece, the lining piece ends up a bit short. I wrote the designer a note making sure I didn’t miss anything and I didn’t, she mentioned since you sew a dividing line in the pockets, nothing falls through. Which is true! But I ended up trimming my outer pocket piece flush with the inner so it was even. In my next version, I’ll just extend the pocket lining piece longer.

I’ve been on a bucket bag kick, I love the shape of this one I saw on Instagram and I think this pattern could be made into something similar. I’m not sure what kind of fabric I’d want to use so for now, I’m just bookmarking it.

I likely will make a Devon Pouch next. I’ve had the pattern for ages and I love watching Svetlana sew them, she makes it look so easy and nice!
